ROCKY
Raccoon came at a time when I had made the decision to let go of a business I had for 17 years, building irrigation systems for some incredible gardens in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It is no wonder that hands feature so fully in my friend the raccoon. My work has required strong hands, practical and technical hands, and the tenacity of problem solving. Raccoons are known for these traits, and they wash their food (when possible) in water to increase the sensitivity of their fingertips. Water!
I originally called this painting “Unfurl” for the power in letting go, relaxing the grip and turning the energy and attention to the surprising and unfolding life. However, with the character in this being he quickly was named “Rocky”!
With this painting, I discovered the joys of paper clay, which dries bone hard and can be painted on.... It can also be fired but in this process that would be impossible! The doll-makers use this product, and it has been wonderful. When you stand back from this piece, you don't immediately notice the hands in low relief, and as you move forward... wait a minute!... the hands are emerging from the painting! My mind tingles with ideas, as it should. Thank you Rockie, for all that you have taught me.
